Confirmation Ministry At Atonement
Our Confirmation Ministry is a two-year program for 7th and 8th grade students. Throughout the two years, students will study Old and New Testament stories, and the Small Catechism. They will also go on several field trips around Kansas City that relate to the things we are learning in class. At the end of the two years, in the fall of their freshman year, our students go through the rite of Confirmation. With the help of our amazing small group leaders, we provide our youth will a full and well-balanced theological education. They also have many opportunities to build relationships with each other and the community around them. Below are some of the things our students enjoy.
Confirmation class meets in the Gathering Place on Sunday mornings, September-May from 9:45-10:45am. Our students are in small groups with two adult leaders. In these groups, we engage in large-group and small-group conversations about the topic of the day. We learn from Scripture, the Catechism, and one another. Contact Eric for questions.
Middle School Hang Nights
Middle schoolers come together on Wednesday nights beginning again on January 8th, from 7:00-8:30pm, for worship, games, and a time of fellowship. We meet in the Youth Room. For details, contact Eric.
Crucifers for Worship
Worship is important for all God’s children and all should be involved in some way. At Atonement we want to be intentional about offering a place specifically for 7th-8th graders to lead our worship as crucifers, typically September through May. Crucifers are involved throughout the service – carrying in the Cross, receiving the offering, and assisting with communion. Training is offered annually; individual training can also be provided by contacting Boo. For questions or more information about scheduling, contact Shana. You can also sign up here.
Every summer, our Confirmation students spend a week together at camp. We spend the week doing special confirmation lessons in the mornings, and regular camp activities the rest of the day. Our youth enjoy being together in the outdoors, and always have a blast at camp swimming, hiking, boating, crafting, and so much more. We’ll be at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp the week of June 7th-13th, 2020; email Eric Foerster for more.
Youth Bells – 2nd Grade through High School
Rehearsals are held in the balcony of the sanctuary on Sundays from 12:30-1:30 pm. Students will learn the basics of reading music, and ringing handbells and chimes to support worship. They will play once a month for worship as well as for the 5:00pm service on Christmas Eve. They are included in the Spring Youth Music Mission Trip, and may participate in the all-day “Ring in the Spring” event the first Saturday of March. Please contact Julie Assel with any questions.
YES WAY! Youth Mission Events
For those not familiar with YES WAY!, it was formed a number of years ago for 4th-6th graders to perform mission work during the year. WHY? Kids are creatures of habit. If we can involve them in volunteering consistently as a youth, they will do so the rest of their lives. We’ve expanded the ministry to include 3rd-8th grade students. Questions, please contact Dawn Greer. Watch the bulletin insert and the eNews for details.
